The black bar chart across the top is the decade view. Each vertical bar is one year, and its height is the raw capture count, how many times the crawler saved something from that address. This is the fastest way to read a site's life at a glance:
- Tall, dense bars: an active, well-linked, crawlable site. Retailers, forums, and news sites look like this.
- Short bars: a small site the crawler visited occasionally. Most local businesses live here.
- A gap between busy years: the site was down, blocking crawlers, or had lost its inbound links.
- Nothing before a certain year: usually the launch date. Sometimes just the year anyone first linked to the site.
- The highlighted bar is the year you are viewing. Click any other bar to jump the calendar across.
A 2009 phpBB forum shows a thin scattering of bars. A national retailer shows a solid wall. Neither is better, they simply tell you how much raw material you have to work with before you zoom in.
The Calendar Grid: Circles, Colors, and Capture Times
Below the bar chart sits the calendar for the selected year. Every colored circle is one crawl of the URL you searched. The colors are not decoration; they are the crawler's status report:
- Blue: successful capture, HTTP 200. Open these.
- Green: a redirect. The capture is just a pointer to another address, follow it instead.
- Orange: a client error, typically a 404. Usually nothing behind it.
- Red: a server error. Move along.
- Multiple circles on one day: hover the day and a popup lists every capture time. Later captures tend to include more of the page's assets.
Once a snapshot loads, look at the black toolbar pinned to the top of the page. It shows the exact capture date, arrows that step capture-by-capture backward and forward through time, and an About this capture link with the crawl details. Those arrows are criminally underused: they let you flip through a redesign month by month like a flipbook, which is the single fastest way to see history of website changes in sequence rather than as isolated stills.

How to See History of Website Pages Beyond the Homepage
The homepage always has the best coverage, but it is rarely the page you need. Pricing tables, product pages, old blog posts, those keep their own separate timelines, and finding them takes one extra step:
- Copy the full deep URL, example.com/pricing, not the bare domain, and paste it into the Wayback search box.
- Read the calendar as usual. Expect fewer circles and patchier years; deep pages get crawled less often than homepages.
- For a full inventory of what was captured, use the asterisk search: web.archive.org/web/*/example.com/* returns the list of matching captured URLs under that prefix.
- Spot-check promising URLs by clicking through. Coverage inside one site varies wildly, the blog might be complete while the store section barely exists.
This is how you find the pages that actually mattered: the 2017 pricing page, the discontinued product, the blog post a client swears existed and their current developer swears it didn't.
Picking a Representative Snapshot: My Five Checks
Often the end goal is one snapshot to stand for the site at its best, for a redesign reference, a pitch deck, or a restore. Hundreds of candidates, one pick. Here is the checklist I run:
- It renders completely. Open it. If the layout collapses into bare text, the CSS and images are missing from that capture. Move a month either way and try again.
- It sits inside a stable era. Avoid captures from the three months around a redesign; half-migrated sites look broken because they genuinely were.
- Internal links work. Click five or six. Dead ends mean shallow crawl coverage for that period, whatever the pretty homepage suggests.
- It predates the problem. For restores: before the hack, before the plugin disaster, before the product line was cut.
- It is a blue-circle 200, not a redirect. Redirects carry no content at all.

Can I see history of website pages that required a login?
No. Archives only hold pages that were publicly crawlable. Anything behind a login, a paywall, or a form was never captured, the Wayback Machine has no credentials and asks for none. If the page required an account, its history exists only in the site's own backups.
Why does the timeline show empty years for a site that was definitely online?
Three usual causes: a robots.txt file blocked crawlers, the site had few or no inbound links so crawlers never found it, or the pages were built so heavily on JavaScript that early crawlers saw nothing worth saving. Cross-check archive.today, an empty Wayback year is not proof the site was down.
What do the colored circles on the calendar mean?
They are HTTP status codes in disguise. Blue means a successful 200 capture, green a redirect, orange a client error like a 404, and red a server error. For almost every purpose you want blue circles, and when a day has several, the latest capture usually has the most assets.
How do I see every archived page of a website at once?
